FRIENDS OF STANSTED HALL

 [FOSH]  SPIRITUAL FELLOWSHIP

HISTORY

At the 1999 Annual General Meeting of the Friends of Stansted Hall its Chairman reported that as a result of various discussions a meeting had been convened for the 20th May at the Hall with flyers being distributed around the local community. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss how local people could become more involved in the Arthur Findlay College.

Whilst many local people regularly supported the public services at the College, there was no SNU Church in the area they could call their own. It was hoped that from this meeting, depending on interest, that Discussion, Awareness and Development Groups could be set up.

As a result of this May meeting, a Spiritual Fellowship Group started meeting in July 1999, and was well established by the time of the FOSH 2000 Annual General Meeting when it was reported that between 10 and 20 people were regularly attending each Thursday from 7.30 – 9pm.

In her address for 2000, Chairman Mrs Nora Shaw [now Minister Nora Shaw]:

”Expressed thanks to the Arthur Findlay College for allowing the Fellowship to meet in the Pioneer Center free of charge, a special privilege. The great benefit of this liaison with the College is that the Fellowship provides a service which has been long overdue for local residents; and it was also raising money which in turn FOSH used to assist with the maintenance of the Hall”

In the intervening years The Fellowship has continued to meet and grow in number, and a big `thank you` is owed to the many, many tutors, and the various teams appointed by the FOSH Committee over the years, who have turned out week after week, to ensure the continuity of the Fellowship to this current day.

The 2008 Education Scheme

During 2008 it became necessary to have a re-think about the format of the Fellowship. Whilst many had been attending for nine years and thus had experience, there were also newcomers with no basic knowledge: and there was no provision for those who now needed a more Advanced Group.

Tutors were voicing their concerns and in particular, the large numbers attending on occasions. This meant no individual attention could be given to students.  There is a limit on numbers in groups when tutoring at the College and this was drawn to our attention. Grateful thanks are due to those tutors who gave unstintingly of their time during this period of discussion on achieving solutions. The FOSH Committee also discussed these concerns with the Fellowship.

The Committee was mindful of its duty of care to all the students but especially the inexperienced newcomers. With this in mind, it was agreed in the first instance to approach the Arthur Findlay College about the possibility of having a further evening allocated to the Fellowship, to run a Basic Awareness Course but the AFC Committee said this was not possible.

The Education Scheme now in place is a result of all these discussions.

The Scheme has been structured so that participating tutors can worth through a planned program for all.  At the time this was the only way the Committee could see of moving forward and providing students with a Group suited to their development. However, it was made clear that this arrangement was not cast in stone, and no doubt would evolve.

Firstly, Fellowship students were asked to complete a questionnaire, to assess which Group they should be allocated: input from the tutors was an essential element when dealing with the allocations.

Additionally, in order to accommodate as many students as possible Cambridge Church offered to host another Fellowship Group, and this allowed some students living in this area to attend locally.

The Group at Cambridge Church meets on a Monday evening, and the tutor is Mr Graham Hewitt. This operates differently to the Pioneer Center  Group because it is working its way through the planned program week by week, starting with Basic Awareness. This Group is also open to members of the Church.

Thanks are due to the Committee of Cambridge Church who have supported our endeavours by making possible not only another Group but also by hosting Workshops which are geared to reflect the work in the Education Scheme.

Fees for each session at the Pioneer Center and Cambridge Church are £5.00, with the exception of the Advanced Group which is £7.00
